1.      Background

The Rainforest Alliance is an international nonprofit organization working to build a future in which nature is protected and biodiversity flourishes, where farmers, workers, and communities prosper, and where sustainable land use and responsible business practices are the norm. We envision a world where people and nature thrive in harmony. In January 2018, the Rainforest Alliance merged with UTZ, a global program and label for sustainable farming. For more information, please visit http://www.rainforest-alliance.org/about.

PT Rainforest Alliance is a registered organization in Indonesia, with its main office in Bali. It promotes and supports farmer implementation of the Sustainable Agriculture system for protecting wildlife, ecosystems, worker’s rights, and promoting the well-being of farmers, their families and communities. Farms that meet the rigorous environmental, social and economic criteria are awarded Rainforest Alliance certification. In Indonesia, more than 50,000 farms are certified, producing cocoa, coffee, tea, spices and palm oil.

Cocoa farming in Poso, Indonesia, faces significant challenges due to climate change, environmental degradation, and unsustainable practices, which have reduced productivity and income for smallholder farmers. Many farmers lack access to climate-smart agricultural techniques, sustainable inputs like organic fertilizers, and the knowledge to preserve soil health and manage pests effectively. Strengthening farmer organizations is essential to improve resource management, collaboration, and access to fair markets. With increasing global demand for sustainably sourced cocoa and regulations like the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), it is vital to equip farmers with the tools and certifications needed to meet these standards. This project aims to support 1,000 smallholder farmers in Poso by providing training in climate-smart agriculture, improving access to sustainable inputs, and preparing them for certification, ensuring better market access and long-term sustainability.

Rainforest Alliance received a grant from GIZ SASCI+ to implement a project aimed at increasing cocoa yields, improving environmental sustainability, and promoting the adoption of agroforestry models. By providing training, technical support, and access to sustainable farming inputs, the project seeks to build resilient farming communities that are better prepared to navigate the challenges posed by climate change while contributing to the long-term sustainability of the cocoa sector. The project will be implemented in Poso, specifically in the sub-districts (Kecamatan) of Lore Peore, Lore Utara, and Lore Timur.

To maintain our networks, track field progress through data collection, assist and provide training to cocoa farmers, adoption, and engage local stakeholders, we need support from experienced consultant   to manage our field activities.
