Consultancy Summary

About the Rainforest Alliance

The Rainforest Alliance is creating a more sustainable world by using social and market forces to protect nature and improve the lives of farmers and forest communities. We work towards making responsible business the new normal through our certification program, tailored supply chain services, landscape and community work and advocacy.

Overview

The Rainforest Alliance is looking for a consultant to help create three (3) “origin sustainability performance and risk reports” for the coffee sectors of Brazil, Colombia, and Honduras, to show key issues and performance on those issues for the sector in the given origin.

These reports will be a synthesis of data and information from various sources, both internal Rainforest Alliance sources and external public sources. The report will be short, with data and visuals, and easy to read. The target audience will be sustainability management at retailers and coffee roasters. The exact format of the report is to be agreed upon between Rainforest Alliance and the consultant.

Rainforest Alliance data sources include certification data, internal “risk maps”, and project monitoring and evaluation data. External information sources include coffee industry reports, grey literature / project reports, and academic literature. The report will focus on key sustainability indicators in the coffee sector. Potential indicators and topics include the following:

  • Environmental: deforestation, agroforestry / shade, carbon footprint, water footprint, and climate vulnerability
  • Social: worker wages, living wage gap, child / forced labor risk, and gender / youth participation
  • Economic: yields, costs of production, farmer income, and living income gap
  • General: total production volume, farm typologies, and certification reach

The timeline for writing this report for three origins is October – December 2022. The project should budget approximately 30 working days.

Main Objectives

Objectives of the assignment include the following:

  • Inform key stakeholders (coffee roasters, retailers, other supply chain actors) of sustainability performance and risks in the three origins
  • Summarize complex sustainability issues into a simple report
  • Identify areas where investment is needed

Deliverables

  • Three origins reports, approximately 10 pages each, with a combination of text and graphics. Rainforest Alliance will provide a template and style guide that the consultant should follow
  • Explanatory guide and list of data sources and references that are used in each report
