About the Rainforest Alliance 

Rainforest Alliance, a New York-based 501(c)3, and UTZ, an Amsterdam-based foundation, merged in 2018. Together, the new Rainforest Alliance is now a $70 million per year organization with offices in 17 countries (and growing) and over 500 staff. The merged organization has two main offices—one in Amsterdam and one in New York City.

Overview  

 

The Rainforest Alliance is seeking a media relations specialist with pitching, editorial and reputational risk experience to cover US media relations during the Senior Media Associate’s maternity leave. The media relations specialist will report to the Global Media Lead and will be responsible for proactive and reactive media relations in the US. He/she will contribute to the strategic objectives of the Rainforest Alliance by increasing visibility, amplifying thought leadership, and securing coverage through US media relations. This role is in the media relations team within the communications department, an international team of over 25 mission-driven and fun professionals based mostly in Amsterdam and New York.   

This role is ideal for a self-driven, detail-oriented media relations specialist or journalist with some experience in the nonprofit, environmental and/or human rights sector.   

 

 

Main Objectives 

 

• Execute the US media relations strategy, spearheading media outreach related to Rainforest Alliance news, opinions, achievements, and key events; 

• Draft, edit, proofread and distribute pitches, media advisories, opinion pieces, and other relevant assets on a weekly basis; 

• Respond to and field media inquiries and handle appropriate follow-up, often on a short deadline, including facilitating interviews with Rainforest Alliance representatives and preparing them for interviews; 

• Monitor mentions in the news; keep relevant staff informed of how the organization is mentioned in the news on a daily basis; propose reacting when appropriate; 

• Act as first point of contact for US-based media outlets; maintain relations with key reporters; respond to PR opportunities; and   

• Support the Lead Corporate Risk & Issues Management in managing any reputational risks that involve US media outlets.   

 

Contractor Services at a minimum, must include: 

 

• Attend weekly media team meetings (1) and check-ins with global media lead (2)   

• Draft, edit, proofread and distribute pitches, media advisories, opinion pieces, and other relevant assets on a weekly basis; 

• Respond to and field media inquiries and handle appropriate follow-up, including facilitating interviews with Rainforest Alliance representatives and preparing them for interviews on a weekly basis; 

• Monitor mentions in the news; keep relevant staff informed of how the organization is mentioned in the news on a daily basis; propose reacting when appropriate;  

• Act as first point of contact for US-based media outlets; and respond to all related emails on a daily basis; 

• Support the Lead Corporate Risk & Issues Management in managing any reputational risks that involve US media outlets on a weekly basis.  

 

Deliverables 

 

  • Weekly reporting on media outcomes to global media lead 
  • Development, production and placement of two opinion-style articles over the course of 16 wks  
  • Daily media monitoring and email notifications to media team/staff 
  • Daily management of all RA US media related email and inquiries 
  • Tracked weekly pitching of priority media article/commentary

  • The Rainforest Alliance reserves the right to request additional information at any time during the procurement process. 
  • RA is at liberty to make multiple or no selections as part of the proposal process. RA also reserves the right to cancel the procurement.  
  • All proposal costs shall be borne by the applicant and will not be reimbursed by RA. 

 

SELECTION CRITERIA 

Candidates should have at a minimum:  

  • At least four years of experience in journalism or public information and media outreach, working directly with journalists under tight deadlines while maintaining high standard of work; Excellent writer with proven storytelling, strategic writing, copywriting and copyediting skills; Reputational risk management experience; Strong public speaker, excellent interpersonal communication skills, ability to interact with individuals with diverse cultural and language backgrounds; Native English skills; knowledge of other languages, Spanish a plus; Strong interest and some experience in social and environmental issues and sustainability; Must be a go-getter, energetically pursing media leads; creative, used to taking initiative, strong attention to detail, self-motivated; Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office, media monitoring programs, internet research); Ability to work independently within a decentralized team, with line manager based in Amsterdam. Strong organizational skills to manage multiple priorities in a time sensitive manner; Experience in a not-for-profit and international environment preferred.  

 

  • And be available Nov 29, 2021 (or earlier if possible) – March 31, 2022, for an estimated 14-21 hrs/wk spread over the week. 
  • Candidates must be eligible to work in the US. Based in NYC is preferred, but not necessary.   
  • Candidate must be available for ET working hours, and at least 2-3 ET mornings/week.
