Rainforest Alliance, a New York-based 501(c)3, and UTZ, an Amsterdam-based foundation, merged in 2018. Together, the new Rainforest Alliance is now a $70 million per year organization with offices in 17 countries (and growing) and over 5000 staff. The Carbon Footprinting consultant will support the Rainforest Alliance to conduct carbon footprinting analysis in farms (primarily in the coffee, cocoa, tea, and fruit sectors). The consultant will also support to recommend footprinting tools and methodologies, interpret footprinting results and explain implications, and recommend carbon reduction scenarios.


The individual will support the Rainforest Alliance climate team to accelerate the work and impact of the organization in support of farmers, farming communities, forestry communities, and other supply chain actors. 


Main Objectives & Deliverables


  • Conduct carbon footprinting, including data collection, data modeling, and analysis of Scope 3 footprints (primarily in coffee, cocoa, tea, and fruit sectors) 
  • Advise other Rainforest Alliance programs on how to most accurately measure and report GHG footprint, estimate potential carbon stocks, and mitigation strategies to maximize impacts for producers and smallholders
  • Model the impact of various intervention strategies (certification, regenerative agriculture, agroforestry, etc.) to reducing Scope 3 emissions
  • Support the design and implementation of climate mitigation activities in various programs of the organization (e.g. client-specific, donor-funded for landscape interventions, etc.) 
  • Advise on GHG footprint reporting needs of key stakeholders 


Level of Effort:

  • This assignment will be for a total of 90 days

  • Proposals and/or any additional information received after the submission time and date are subject to rejection by The Rainforest Alliance. Incomplete proposals may be rejected by RA at its discretion.
  • The Rainforest Alliance reserves the right to request additional information at any time during the procurement process.
  • RA is at liberty to make multiple or no selections as part of the proposal process. RA also reserves the right to cancel the procurement.
  • All proposal costs shall be borne by the applicant and will not be reimbursed by RA.


Selection Criteria

  • Relevant undergraduate degree holder and ideally MSc degree engineering, environmental sciences, tropical agronomy or natural resources management with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in climate change mitigation activities at field level;
  • Experience in tropical agriculture, forestry, supply chains or related field;
  • Experience in carbon stock measurements; compensation; neutrality; GHG footprint tools such as Cool Farm Tool; experience in monitoring, reporting, and verification requirements of SBTi and REDD+;
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple priorities in a time sensitive manner; 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; and,
  • Fluency in English; other languages – Spanish, French, Bahasa (desirable).
